One of my favorite things about being a priest is not having to listen to homilies.😎
Normally this wouldn't be a problem but our pastor is on sabbatical so they pulled in some other priest to run our mass time and since midterms are coming up he just gave me the worst homily I've ever heard in my whole life.

Yeah, he's wrong about everything.

What? Ed Zitron has been wrong about everything. In fact I want a Zitron reader to tell me one single thing he's ever been right about about.

He said OpenAI was closing by end of 2023, then by end of 2024. He said they'd never be able to serve Sora to public.
How is everything he has said verifiably false ? He seems to be pretty on the money about AI's unsustainable business model and the likes, though granted the way he phrases it can be grating and is often overly dramatic

If you read Ed Zitron and you think he isn't bullshitting you're probably an idiot. Nothing he says is true. He says stuff for angry people because angry people are willing to believe anything and pay for it. He's like those right wingers who have podcasts about immigrants.

Barron: "Because you can be going on this path: 'oh I'm on the magnanimous path. I'm just seeking...' No, but you actually took a turn a while ago."

"Why don't they just make torrents illegal then??"

Bröther, they have tried.
LibGen is a TORRENT TRACKER like ThePirateBay. It's a website that aggregates torrent magnet links. Torrents are a p2p network that allows distributed sharing of files without any single, central source.

The books mentioned in that article are those available on the database. That's all it is.

Prevaricate [pruh-VAIR-ih-keyt]
(v.)
- To deliberately evade the truth; to speak misleadingly; to lie.

Used in a sentence:
"Poor Pinocchio’s pernicious propensity to prevaricate promotes probiscal protuberance prolongation.”

A part of me half expects Anthropic to shut down any moment now, not out of financial hardship but because Dario decides that the project of preventing AGI from being Chinese has failed epically, they can't collaborate with the gov, and they're causing more harm than good.

Yes, NLP people being upset about modern LLMs is like a cliche at this point.

bsky.app/profile/keyt...
Fun fact: There are some NLP people who are extremely salty about current AI systems, and see them as sort of alien technologies.

One example is WordFreq, a project that analyzed word trends on the web, which the creator shut down because they didn't want "to help AI".

The Doctorow/Zitron thesis is this:
bsky.app/profile/keyt...
Bosses are dumb, they're getting duped. LLMs exist, and they may get slightly better. They're overplanning for it, and sometime over the next 5 years it'll be evident that progress doesn't match the expectation. Then, the bubble will come down crashing down like a house of cards.

Corporations, please hire me to stress test your dumb AI generators, I will find all of their weaknesses. Somehow I’m gonna turn “sitting around in my underwear trying to make the art robot do Boglin tiddies” into lucrative “expert corporate consulting” gigs bsky.app/profile/keyt...

Guy has never been right about anything, but his readers are telling me he'll be right aaaany day now.
So far, Nate Silver and Matt Yglesias have come out against this piece which means you know with 100% certainty that Ed is correct and you should listen to what he’s saying

I have the same view

Posted about this many times, but it's a major cultural difference between the software industry (Born 50 years ago and growing for a few decades) grown with free information ideals, and the media industry (Born 120+ years ago) with a century of corporate control of information.

To all the responses that are like "But I'm an author AND I support libraries!", I have to say, it's an incredible accomplishment to be an author and also illiterate.
I fully believe that modern authors would be against public libraries if they were proposed today.
