Another chilly morning at MPX

“Blues In the Night” was the theme song of the Big Band radio station we listened to at my Dad’s sandwich shop in downtown Oakland. I love hearing it.

In The Rock 4/7/1967: With deejay Tom Donahue at the helm, San Francisco radio station KMPX-FM begins playing a free-form, progressive rock and roll in format, 24 hours a day. FM rock radio is born. #KMPX #FM #NoStaticAtAll #RockHonorRoll

Beggars Banquet with a KMPX radio stamp. This was the underground rock station established in ‘67 that was sort of a precursor to the more famous KSAN.

This is way cool 😎- I’ve read about it but never heard it: Sometime in April of 1967, Grateful Dead members, JERRY GARCIA and PHIL LESH were interviewed and were guest DJ's on KMPX during Tom Donahue's program.

#ChurchOfRockAndRoll #61 In late '60s San Francisco, Tom Donahue cut loose from radio's pop format. He and his fellow KMPX station DJs played their own choice of album tracks, thus starting FM underground and rock radio. We could use someone like him now #TomDonahue

Remember Tom Donahue, the father of underground radio at KMPX then KSAN in SF with Richard Gossett and a great cast of others.

When I was a teenager KMPX changed from rock to 1920s-early '50s popular music. I was suddenly in listener heaven, as were a number of my friends and, apparently, a lot of Cal-Berkeley students (see article).

This wasn't "music of your life" dreck, but solid, intelligent programming.

January 9th is one of the few days when the boys did not play. With no show to highlight, we point you to one of our favorite runs and an incredible 2-hour segment with Jerry and Phil spinning records and chatting with Tom "Big Daddy" Donahue on KMPX back in 1967. gratefuldeadoftheday.com/01-09-1965

Dusty Street passed, she was a lady DJ in the days when that was rare, working at KMPX and KSAN in San Francisco from 1967 to 1978 and from 1979 through 1996 in the evenings on KROQ in LA.

The world will be a sadder place without

He was an actual DJ at KMPX in San Francisco, one of the early FM underground stations. I thrive at being a fountain of useless stuff! Sad that he passed.

Here might be my favorite clip..
