KARACHI: Residents may face water supply disruption in parts of the metropolis following a power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station on Sunday morning, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said. Dhabeji pumping station is the city’s primary water intake point and highly dependent on uninterrupted electricity. Even brief outages result in immediate service disruptions. In a statement, a KWSC spokesperson said that power to several phases of the pumping station was suspended at 6am due to a cable fault in K-Electric’s system. “Power breakdown suspended supply to the third phase, fourth phase, and K-3 Pump House at Dhabeji,” the statement said, adding that due to the breakdown, 10 out of 21 pumps were currently non-functional. The statement added that water supply to the city could be partially affected due to the closure of the pumps. KWSC officials were in contact with KE to restore electricity, it added. “Ten affected pumps will be made operational immediately once power is restored at Dhabeji,” the KWSC said, appealing to citizens to avoid unnecessary water use. Meanwhile, a KE spokesperson said that a fire in the bushes near the pumping station had led to the cable fault. In a statement, the spokespeson added that a technical team was present at the site, which remained in coordination with KWSC officials to restore power supply and was providing all possible assistance. On July 27, the city faced a shortfall of 48 million gallons of water following a breakdown at Dhabeji, affecting areas including parts of North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi and Scheme 33. Earlier that month, another electricity outage at Dhabeji had affected its K-2 Pump House, where the manifold chamber and main valves developed a fault. As a result, three major pumps at the K-2 Pumping Station were temporarily shut down. On June 1, supply from Hub Pumping Station was also suspended to parts of Karachi due to a fault in KE’s main cable. At the time, KWSC said that the power suspension had resulted in a daily water shortfall of 85 million gallons per day (MGD) for the city. It was the third consecutive day of power failures at key pumping stations disrupting distribution across the metropolis, as the day prior the city faced a shortfall of 122 MGD after electricity supply to the North East Karachi Pumping Station was disrupted due to a fault in KE main cable. On May 30, yet another emergency shutdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station forced 10 of the station’s 21 pumping units to shut down.

KARACHI: The residents of Defence Housing Authority and Clifton may heave a sigh of relief as the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation and the Frontier Works Organisation on Saturday signed an agreement to complete the laying of a dedicated pipeline from Dumlottee within 12 months to ease the chronic water problem in the salubrious vicinities of the city. The agreement was signed in a ceremony attended by Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab and senior officials of KWSC and FWO. “Upon completion of the project, an additional 10 million gallons per day (MGD) of water will be provided from Dumlottee to Defence and Clifton,” the mayor said, adding that the additional supply was an important step towards overcoming the water shortage. He said that construction would begin next week and is targeted for completion within 12 months at an estimated cost of Rs14 billion. With demand estimated at around 1,200 MGD, KWSC is currently able to supply only 550 to 650 MGD. The gap has left residents of Karachi heavily reliant on private tankers. Calling it a joint initiative of the provincial government and KWSC, the mayor said that the provincial administration was working to make the city’s water supply system more efficient and sustainable. While the 10 MGD addition is modest compared to the city’s overall deficit, officials project it as immediate relief that could be delivered within a year. KARACHI: While the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) is widely blamed for failing to provide water in many areas connected to its piped network across the metropolis, the utility has burdened Karachi residents with higher costs as it notified a uniform 7.05 per cent increase in water and sewerage charges for its residential and bulk consumers. The latest increase has marked the second major hike in just two years as in September 2024 the corporation had increased its monthly charges by roughly 23 per cent. At the time, sewerage charges were set at nine per cent of water charges. The decision draws widespread criticism from the public who have to rely on water tankers as the KWSC failed to ensure uninterrupted water supply in their areas. > Uniform 7.05pc increase in monthly water and sewerage charges notified A notification published in the Sindh Government Gazette on August 10, 2026 made the increase official, following approval by the KWSC Board of Directors to revise both retail and bulk tariffs in line with the average Consumer Price Index. Under the revised tariff, monthly water and sewerage charges for residential plots will be based on plot size, while fixed monthly rates have also been set for various categories of commercial establishments and shops. The hike in water and sewerage charges triggered concern and anger among people, many terming it injustice to people who did not even get adequate water supply despite paying hefty bills. Muhammad Irfan, a resident of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, said that they got water only twice a month and that too for hardly half an hour. “We still have to buy tankers and now we have to pay the full increased bill. Where is the justice in this?“ he asked. A housewife from Model Colony, Sadia Butt, said that after electricity and gas, now the water had gone up too. “With a seven per cent increase, everyone’s bill goes up,” she said adding that it was already so hard to manage expenses these days. Abdul Ghafoor, a shopkeeper in Khokrapar, Malir, said that there had been no piped water in his area at all, still the water utility sent them a fixed bill without meters. “With this fresh hike, small traders like us will face more burden,” he added. A resident of Saddar said: “The government says it will provide facilities. We don’t get facilities, instead the bill increases every year.” KWSC officials said that the objective of the revision was to strengthen the corporation’s revenue base and generate sustainable resources for water supply and for the operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of the city’s sewerage network and other civic services. According to KWSC data, the corporation collected Rs8.14 billion in the first four months of 2026, with average monthly revenue now exceeding Rs2.26 billion. However, the KWSC’s recovery rate remains low as in FY24 only 36 per cent of billed grievances were resolved within the stipulated time under the previous system in financial year 2024-25. The KWSC Act 2023 provides the legal cover for such revisions, empowering the utility to adjust tariffs annually in accordance with inflation without seeking fresh legislation each year. The KWSC officials said that without additional revenue, service delivery would deteriorate further and the revision was also tied to the utility’s commitments under the World Bank-funded Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project. _Published in Dawn, August 13th, 2026_

KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) on Sunday cautioned that parts of the metropolis might face disruption in water supply after a power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station. The Dhabeji Pumping Station, the city’s primary water intake point, is highly dependent on uninterrupted electricity. Even brief outages result in immediate service disruptions. According to a KWSC spokesperson, the breakdown occurred at 8:45am in the third phase of the Dhabeji pumping station, due to which the power supply to the phase remained suspended. “K-Electric has declared a cable fault at the station. A technical team has reached the site to rectify the fault,” the spokesperson told _Dawn_. He added that three pumps at the Dhabeji pumping station had been temporarily shut down due to the fault, which was likely to affect water transmission to various parts of the metropolis. “The Corporation estimates a temporary shortfall of 75 million gallons per day in the city’s water supply due to the cable fault,” he mentioned. Areas likely to be affected include parts of North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi and Scheme 33, the spokesperson elaborated. He stated that KWSC was in constant contact with KE for immediate rectification of the fault and full restoration of electricity. “All pumps will be made operational immediately after complete restoration of power to bring the water supply back to normal,” the spokesperson added. On Thursday, the Sindh cabinet approved a 40 per cent increase in the cost of a dedicated water line, to be laid by the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), to supply water to Defence Housing Authority (DHA) from Dumlotee, on the outskirts of Karachi. Earlier this month, an electricity outage at the K-2 Pumping Station had caused three major pumps at the K-2 Pumping Station to shut down.
