Anyway back to enjoying my family vacation on this former Danish slave colony/site of Taino/Kalinago genocide turned second-class US possession in the Caribbean

Just discovered that Mademoiselle de Roselan, wife of the French governor of St Lucia in the 1650s, was, in fact...Indigenous Kalinago! I've read of European men cohabitating with Kalinago in the Caribbean, but not formal marriages where Caribbean women are acknowledged by their husband's titles. 🤯

This year I wrote a book about how Columbus colonized the Caribbean in 1492 - not what is now the US mainland.

My book DARK LABORATORY celebrates Kalinago survivance and the African agrarian x aquatic traditions people like my ancestors, who were enslaved, brought to the region.

During colonisation of Grenada, Indigenous Kalinago were trapped by French at Morne des Sauteurs. With no hope, 40 jumped to their deaths. Survivors included 'quite beautiful' 12 year old girl fought over by 2 French officers, until a third came up and shot her dead, ending the dispute.

The Garifuna are literally a tribe formed from the Arawak (Descendants of the Taíno people who Columbus first met and enslaved), the Carib (for whom the Caribbean is named, also known as the Kalinago) and escaped slaves.

Leave them alone!!!!
Honduran riot cops are evicting an afro-indigenous Garifuna community so that a foreign billionaire can use their ancestral islands to film the reality TV show "Survivor."

I have a Trinidadian Taino character in my WIP. She’s badass, beautiful, flawed and frustrated. I love her.

It was important to me to have an Taino or Kalinago character because there are only 1,400 indigenous Trinbagonians left now, and many people don’t know about their history. #writingsky
Tell me about your indigenous characters! What are they like? what do they mean to you? #WritingPrompt

TIL that the word cannibalism is derived from the native Caribs of Kalinago island, and that's… kinda racist, huh.

But it was with English expansion in Atlantic that West Africa transformed into major supplier of enslaved people for the transatlantic trade. From 1620s English conquest & occupation of Kalinago islands in Lesser Antilles led to unprecedented demand for labour 17/

🇩🇲 Would you like a thread on the multiple layers of multilingualism in Dominica? Of course you do.
Starting with the linguistic memory of the indigenous Kalinago, still present in many toponyms and other names. The spelling varies widely but the meaning is often quite well documented or remembered.

Honorio's 'Nova Typis Transacta Navigatio. Novi Orbis Indiae Occidentalis' (1621), with an image of the Kalinago seeing off a Spanish attack in the Caribbean (and depictions of imagined cannibalism). The Spanish called the Kalinago 'the greatest warriors of America, the anthropophagous Caribs'.

Popular tactic of English slavers in the Caribbean was to invite Kalinago to be entertained onboard, and then of course kidnap them and sell them into slavery. The Kalinago became so wise to it that the English began flying the Dutch flag to lure them in, so wary were they of the flag of St George.

Sentence I’m happy with in my writing today:

‘The time of the Kalinago was fading and that of the European was at hand, and they promised a world not of homelands but of colonies.’

1491, if you're Carib (Kalinago), Taino (Arawak), Seminole or Miccosukee.

I should say the process in making it is fascinating, too: a single agreement, but signed by 3 separate delegations of Anglo-French and Kalinago on 3 different islands more or less simultaneously.
