"釜石大観音" , Kamaishi Daikannon, Iwate Prefecture.
The Kamaishi Daikannon is a gigantic Buddha statue erected in 1970 to pray for the peace of the world and those who died in wars and disasters.
Length 69.5cm （27.3in). Circa 1970s or 1980s. #vintage
1, Pennant of Kamaishi Daikanon. It is a cream-colored cloth with an illustration printed on it and decorated with yellow fringe. The Kamaishi Daikannon is 48.5 meters (159.1 feet) tall, it is one of the landmarks of Kamaishi City. 2, The illustration is of Kamaishi Daikanon and a map of the Sanriku coast. The title is in Japanese. "Kamaishi Daikannon" (red) in kanji. 3, Enlargement of the illustration. The present Sanriku Coast (the old Rikuchu Coast). The illustration depicts a complex coastline (Rias), with more than 20 major towns and other place names, as well as the Japan National Railways (JNR) lines. 4, The illustration on the right side of the flag may be Jodogahama Beach (Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture).

Fifteen years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.
In Iwate Prefecture, the disaster claimed 5,145 lives, with 1,110 people still missing. When I was younger, I lived in Miyako. I also lost an acquaintance in Kamaishi, and some of my relatives were affected by the disaster.

The city of Kamaishi in Iwate Prefecture is said to have been the first place on Japan's main island of Honshu to suffer a naval bombardment during World War II. Mutsuko Sano, 94, clearly heard the earth rumbling.

More than 5,000 shells were fired into Kamaishi, which had a large iron mill, on July 17 and Aug. 9, 1945, killing a total of 782 people, mostly civilians.

I'm riding in the first car(of 2) of the Kamaishi line out of Morioka. The train is built for snow and sounds like a diesel hybrid. County-ass level grade crossings everywhere. Of course the doors don't open automatically.

The tracks are still in better condition than the Northeast Corridor

Kamaishi City is a port town facing the Pacific Ocean, known for its fisheries and steel industry. On a hill overlooking Kamaishi Bay is a huge statue of the Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, nearly 50 meters (160 feet) tall.
Kamaishi pennant, overall. Printed on white cloth. Kamaishi pennant, partial. Highlighted with gold powder. Kamaishi Bay and Kamaishi Taikannon. Japanese painting-like effect. The title design is in Mincho Kanji, italicized. Vivid impression with gold powder.
