Just realized that boro and kantha — the Japanese and Indian techniques for repairing cloth or creating new material from scraps by connecting them through a series of running stitches — looks a bit like the peeling bark on an aging tree.

kantha is a south asian technique for recycling scrap fabric. it was originally used at a time when fabric was very precious. the technique involves attaching layers of scrap material using a running stitch (pics 1, 2 and 3). it's similar to japanese boro (pic 4).

some designers have incorporated these ideas into clothes. kapital does a boro jacket (pic 1). 11.11 has kantha shorts (pic 2) and capsule collection at NYC's Nepenthes using scrap Engineered Garments fabric (pic 3). if you're timid, bedspread is easiest

Kantha in Bengali means cloth, traditionally made from the best parts of old worn saris or dhotis. Also the name of a way of stitching in which variations of running stitch are worked though all the layers of cloth, quilting them together, creating intricate designs #WomensArt
