Behind the 'kara-mon' (唐門) is a moulded pile of sand. Symbolically, imperial messengers would step through the sand to purify their feet, but additionally the white sand cleverly reflected light from full moons to illuminate the garden.

The photograph focuses on the upper eaves and roofline of one of Nikkō's masterworks—likely the Karamon or the Gohonden—where early Edo-period Gongen-zukuri architecture reached its absolute zenith of visual opulence. Crouching along the gilded ridge beam (mune) is a bronze dragon (ryū) coated in a deep verdigris patina, its sinuous body poised against the dark, ribbed copper tiles. In Japanese sacred architecture, the dragon serves not only as a symbol of cosmic power and imperial authority, but also as an apotropaic guardian protecting the wooden sanctuary from fire and evil spirits. Sartorially and structurally, every square inch of the building demonstrates the extraordinary synthesis of timber framing, metalwork, and sculptural art executed during the Kan'ei-era expansion under Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Gold foil as well as hand carved flowers and birds ornately decorate the doors and both sides of the gate. Two dragons are carved on the gate pillars that stand on both sides of the Karamon. They are known as Noboriryu and Kudariryu, which means Ascending Dragon and Descending Dragon. The dragons are said to be the works of Hidari Jingoro, a famous sculptor who lived in the Edo period. Legend has it that every night two dragons visit the Shinobazu Pond to drink from its water.
