I support #Ukraine being a North Karelian. People fight the Russians at massive scale.

We should never forget about Ukraine. Finland is ready for a big fight, and we should learn tactics from the Ukrainians

I find competition extremely boring, do not want to command other people to do anything and cannot monetise even my own work properly — that being said, many aspects of North Karelian life are the best in the world.
If living car-free in a rural place next to the Russian border was just a utopia, welcome to Joensuu.

We put the ’act’ in climate activism

@jordantcarlson.bsky.social It’s relatively easy to harangue other nations from the North Karelian perspective, even the Finnish larger cities in the south are not going as hard as we do in many aspects of environmental sustainability

But Canadians seem cool and listen to reason

I've been in Finland for less than 4 hours and I've already had a Karelian pie

(Delicious, btw)

This is the most beautiful place in Finland. I might be biased as a Karelian, but it is also the site of a private wetland restoration project, the largest in Finland.

A mining company just withdrew plans to operate in the Natura 2000 area.

The morning was misty with light rain. The exit hike followed a path on the river, in an old-growth forest.

The last section included duckboards on a bog. The rising sun hovered over the tree tops, light shining through the mist.

Protect and restore wetlands! 😉

I'm out here trying to figure out wether there's something in finnish kitchen that would be on the same level with surströmming but I can't find anything that would be on par with it. So I'll be fine with karelian stew and karelian pies. 😂

You should follow this handle and talk about the protection of the most original nature we still have in the Nordics.

Not a lot of people do that, it is that rare and unique. I’m obliged as a Karelian
I happen to know some Sámi who chart the last unprotected primary forests (yes Primary, not only old-growth) in Sápmi.

Share their findings

In my region, that spans political parties, as sufficiency is a Karelian thing. Many businesses, sports clubs, NGOs, etc. promote it.

I could have been a rich douchebag, flying around and dreaming of a bigger SUV. Being Karelian, I like the e-MTB, restoring rivers and resisting the extraction of protected nature more than any money, status, or fame.

I joined the Left Alliance because most of the climate heating is caused by the wealthy 10 % with their hypermobile tourism preferences. Monetising nature for such pursuits is so un-Karelian that I instinctively oppose it.

Being from a Karelian family, having been asked to move here by Border Guards, and having visited these places many times, I'm for nature.

The Karelian singers of the Kalevala worked in pairs, one voice answering the other. On October 9th, #MelodicDeathMetal #Amorphis plays Auditorio CEG in Bogotá, #Colombia, for a fourth time, and the crowd supplies the second voice.

Amid concerns over the presence of bears in urban areas, a Sapporo-based environmental nongovernmental organization is planning to bring in a special breed of dog to help respond to incidents.

It plans to import a Karelian bear dog — a Finnish breed historically used to hunt large wild animals — from the U.S. in February.

Met with pilot veterans in 200x: WO Erkki Pakarinen(Brewsters & Bf109s) grabbed my arm, smiled and told me about his trips into Karelian wilderness between flights. He passed away 2006.

It'll be a great comfort to me and my comrades to know that British Super Special Soldiers are on our side when we freeze our balls off in some trench in the Karelian Isthmus while conserving our ammo.

Free Novgorod, Pskov, Ingrian, Karelian republics, and #FreeBelarus on our Eastern borders should be our long term goal.

Found a transliterator.

There are a lot of Indo-European loans in the dictionary, and presumably also in the Komi language.

It's not like Karelian or Veps. It's, as expected, distant from Finnish.

The vocabulary is quite different. Even pre-modern words, e.g. nature.

My husband knows I have to pet all the dogs and I am an encyclopedia of breeds. I can generally tell what breed a dog is. I literally said to him that’s a Karelian Bear Dog. He said bullshit and asked the owner. I was right and got to spend extra time petting the dog. Yes that is a real dog…

🕙An eyewitness told Astra that the intensified checks at Karelian border crossings began in August.

💥According to the witness, border guards are checking the documents of men and visitors, taking photos of tourists' passports, and asking about their places of residence.

Checked, I was actually misquoting him a little. He wrote that it was ”around 120MW” at the time he was spending summers in Karelian (1932–1934) and later upgraded to 150MW.
