Carney, who has been sober for over three years, is currently working as a junior pathways coach at the Keebra Park rugby league academy on the Gold Coast, affiliated with the Gold Coast Titans. He has expressed his desire to coach at the NRL level but emphasized that he is taking a gradual approach, prioritizing his young family and enjoying the current role with younger players. Matty Johns, a shareholder of the Gold Coast Titans, has praised Carney's coaching abilities and believes he has the potential to become an NRL coach. Carney also discussed his friendship with former teammate Mitchell Pearce, with whom he has formed the Reboot Mindset Academy, focusing on helping others overcome personal challenges. Both Carney and Pearce have been sober for nearly three and a half years, and they have been working together to support young athletes. Carney acknowledged his past struggles with alcohol and off-field incidents that derailed his playing career, including a controversial 'bubbler' photo incident. Despite these challenges, he has turned his life around and is now dedicated to mentoring young players. The article highlights Carney's journey from a troubled player to a dedicated coach, emphasizing his commitment to personal growth and helping others. He stressed the importance of taking things step by step and not rushing into the high-pressure environment of NRL coaching. Carney's current role allows him to focus on developing young talent without the pressures of top-level coaching, which he believes is crucial for his long-term development in the sport. The article also touches on the broader context of Carney's career, noting that his playing career was marked by off-field issues, but he has since made significant strides in his personal and professional life. His partnership with Pearce, built on mutual support and shared experiences, has become a cornerstone of his current endeavors. The Reboot Mindset Academy aims to provide guidance and support to young athletes, drawing from Carney and Pearce's own experiences with addiction and personal challenges. Carney's journey reflects a broader narrative of redemption and personal growth within the rugby league community, offering hope and inspiration to others facing similar challenges. The article concludes by emphasizing Carney's dedication to his current role and his belief that with time and patience, he can eventually transition to NRL coaching.
