I once watched an anime at oomf's suggestion and it was a period piece that focused on the kempeitai solving a murder or sth and just the mere mention of the unit's name set me so ill at ease. But all that never happened amirite 😐

It seems like there's a pretty big gap in the historiography otherwise, given that these guys were basically the Gestapo and the Kripo rolled into one for the Imperials. There's more available about their cousins in the IJA's Kempeitai, less so for the Navy's version.

ICE is definitely the new Gestapo. They are just as evil and heartless as Italy's Black Shirts, Japan's Kempeitai Spain's Falange, Saudi Arabia's Mabahith, Albania's Sigurimi and Haiti's Tonton Macoute.

I mean these are also the people who literally legitimized suicide bombing as a modern tactic. The bit that after the first wave they increasingly needed the Kempeitai to hold guns to heads and threaten families to get 'volunteers' is admittedly usually left out.

Which was given strong 'encouragement' by both conventional IJA soldiers and the Kempeitai. There was a blend of a few genuine people who did it and a great deal of 'die gloriously or die trying or get the firing squad'.
