This is just a bizarre take from someone local to DC. Artists who have cancelled at the KenCen rebooked at venues like Strathmore and the Hamilton. Frankly some of them are much nicer venues! The calculus for the artist is exactly opposite what she imagines.

I watched the network newscasts’ coverage of Trump’s KenCen takeover. NBC correctly called it a MAGA makeover but its report was far too credulous; ABC noted Trump now ran the KenCen but just read the honorees; CBS only had the names and that the show would air on the network. Shameful.

Data is wonky right now with Nielsen's new "big data" panel. But in prelims, KenCen did just 2.65M viewers. Even with a massive 25% lift, the show still finishes in the mid-3M range-- well below last year. In demos, it's even more of a massacre-- currently it's a 0.14, roughly HALF of 2024 show

Unfortunately, "Live From Lincoln Center" stopped new broadcasts in 2019!
Both KenCen and Lincoln suffer from old, outdated philanthropic models that rely on the largess of a relatively small group of rich people rather than a democratized investment that truly comes from everyone in the nation.

The WaPo continues to do some excellent journalism despite its owner and so many rounds of layoffs, but: It's sort of pathetic that there was a huge, visual protest at the Kennedy Center today-- and there's zero evidence of it on the Post's home page. And they even have a story about the KenCen!

Bravo. We just went to the KenCen for a great production of Porgy & Bess, but we'd rather go somewhere else. And BTW, if you do go to the KenCen, HIS picture is in the Hall of States. Enter through the Hall of Nations to avoid his orange mug.

I adore KenCen and have stood on the Concert Hall stage for many hours, rehearsing and performing as a member of a symphonic chorus. It breaks my heart that you must do this, but you MUST! I salute you.

I finally decided not to renew my membership to the KenCen. I’d rather see it go dark for 4 years. We have the National Theater, arena, and many others in DC, and the Baltimore symphony in Baltimore and Silver Spring.
