California Calendar summons nostalgia for California's famous citrus labels and the agrarian past that spawned their creation. Their horizontal, colorful format is here adapted to monumental size, an oil painting executed on canvas. Posed with a book, a native beauty basks in the bounty of the state's sun-drenched lifestyle. Her attire fits perfectly with cleverly-done shadows on her clean white top with red trim, knee-length red skirt, red shoes, and red ties for her black braids. Reclining against the backdrop of furrowed fields and golden hills, she personifies California as Arcadia, a period paradise as mythical to Americans then as it remains today. Kenton Nelson was born and raised in Los Angeles. For 50 years he had his studio in Pasadena before moving to San Clemente. Primarily self-taught, painting with oil on canvas or panel, Nelson creates his “perfect world”, full of implied stories and glorious California light. Nelson’s paintings have been featured seven times on the cover of The New Yorker magazine.
