When I could not find her
I walked to the garden
and there
among the zinnias
as if she were one of them
hands plunged into the black soil
she turned her face towards me
and bloomed

the sunlight dreams of skin
but his is made of paper—
folded, crumpled, singed
touch becomes smoke
becomes flame
becomes ash
words turn into birds
turn into lullabies hummed backward
they fly and hide
behind locked doors

sodden earth
relentless wind
oak stood forty years
breaking point
splinter shards
ripping then
untethered
roots grasping
for the soul of the soil
leaves grieving the light
that no longer attaches
