At the current discounted rate of $123.98 - or $124, that's $12.40 per episode... or about the price for two episodes of Dragon Ball on VHS during the Kidmark release days.

Pretty much, yeah. It wasn't a total flop, but it wasn't a major success, either. They seem to have done better with the tapes than with the syndication, as the series got a full run from Kidmark, and they're far from rare.

Random discovery of the now:

Here's the intro to the official first volume of the edited English dubbed VHS for the Dragon Ball TV series put out by Kidmark!

It took until 2009 for US fans to get these first 13 episodes uncut and with Japanese audio on DVD!

The second upload is from the same VHS tape, the 1995 Kidmark release of Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies. This ad is for action figures

so when did you find it? for me it was the mid 90s sailor moon was in syndication dragon ball season1 was dubbed and sold by kidmark

For comparison, most "black box" tapes say Kidmark instead. The volume number on any of these is just a sticker on the spine, the cases are otherwise identical to other volumes (sans Kidmark/Voyager logo differences)

Reaching out to the internet again for help tracking down a rare release:
Does anybody have a "black box" Star Blazers VHS that says "Voyager" on the front, **not** "Kidmark", with a volume number greater than 26? These would have only been on the market for only about a year before being replaced.

It could well be when Japanese movies were also first coming out ( yes they are different ) they might have gotten remade by Kidmark / Trimark as well.

Historically apparently when Korean-movies get brought over to the US and remade, they're often remade by Romanian-American studios. I'd be curious why that is, if that's how the deck of cards fell, if there is underlying reason there.

Speaking of Trimark and Kidmark.

The only Slavic, but also kind of NOT Slavic country I had been somewhat interested in is #Romania.

And not for the reasons you might think, being someone into Goth culture.

Rather formative movies growing up turned out to be a Romanian American team.

#kidmark specifically.

My main familiarity with Romania is in the Kidmark Movies made in the 90s. So I definitely have more research to do there.

The reason why it took so long was because Kidmark (which was eventually bought out by Lionsgate) held the home video distribution rights to the first 13 episodes (and first movie) for Dragon Ball until 2009.

A similar situation happened with the first chunk of DBZ w/ Pioneer!

Well, there's the Dragon Ball tapes from Kidmark. Or the DBZ singles from Funimation.

Movie 4 was dubbed while the show was still being dubbed, so it has the most consistent cast between the 2.
And, Movie 1. FUNimation apparently originally dubbed it in 1995 when they were starting with the original series before they licensed & dubbed Z in conjunction with BLT & Kidmark. Like the...
