Lewis and Clark on the Lower Columbia by Charles Marion Russell, 1905, Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Fort Worth, TX)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Realism #WesternArt
In 1904, Russell and his wife Nancy traveled to St. Louis to visit his family and attend the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The largest world’s fair up to that time, the exposition commemorated the centennial of Lewis and Clark’s epic journey of exploration across the continent, which was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. This watercolor was one of a number of works Russell later produced of the subject. Here, the red-haired William Clark stands in his canoe with a flintlock rifle cradled in his arms, while the Shoshone guide, Sacagawea, communicates with a group of Columbia River Indians.

“Bringing Home the Meat” by Charles M. Russell (American) - Oil on canvas / c. 1891-1896 - Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Fort Worth, Texas) #womeninart #westernart #art #oilpainting #CharlesRussell #AmericanArt #AmonCarterMuseum #womensart #AmericanArtist #NativeAmerican #Indigenous #hunter
American artist Charles M. Russell’s oil painting “Bringing Home the Meat” captures the spirit of the American West with a vivid portrayal of Native American life. The painting shows two Indigenous women on horseback triumphantly hauling dead antelope down a narrow path on a hill in the American frontier, embodying strength, survival, and their connection to nature. Russell’s dynamic brushstrokes and earthy tones evoke the rugged beauty of the landscape and the deep connection between the native people and the land. Charles Marion Russell, also known as C. M. Russell, Charlie Russell, and "Kid" Russell, was an American artist of the American Old West. He created more than 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Native Americans, and landscapes set in the western United States and in Alberta, Canada, in addition to bronze sculptures. He is known as "the cowboy artist" and was also a storyteller and author. He became an advocate for Native Americans in the west, supporting the bid by landless Chippewa to have a reservation established for them in Montana. In 1916, Congress passed legislation to create the Rocky Boy Reservation. The C. M. Russell Museum Complex in Great Falls, Montana houses more than 2,000 Russell artworks, personal objects, and artifacts. Major collections are held at the Montana Historical Society in Helena, Montana, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Sid Richardson Museum also in Fort Worth. His mural Lewis and Clark Meeting the Flathead Indians hangs in the state capitol building in Helena, and his 1918 painting Piegans sold for $5.6 million at a 2005 auction.

In Without Knocking by Charles Marion Russell, 1909, Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Fort Worth, TX)

As in all his depictions of cowboy life, Russell included a wealth of fascinating detail. The cowboys' dress and saddle outfits are all different, reflecting a wide range of she influences. The rider second from left wears a Montana short-brim peak hat, and his pants are typically cuffed since they were sold as "one size fits all.'" His finely tooled saddle seems to have a cantle covered in rattlesnake skin - a talisman originating in Texas and Mexico to ward off saddle sores. The horses are wonderfully rendered, particularly the one that has just put its foreleg through the wooden porch.
