Here's the headline fact: OpenAI disrupted a coordinated campaign to extract its models' protected reasoning. It has linked a core cluster of that activity directly to Moonshot AI, the Chinese startup behind the Kimi models. According to OpenAI's own account of the incident, the earliest requests date to the first week of July 2026. Volume spiked to 16,000 requests from more than 4,000 users over just two days, July 24 and 25. A wider web of related prompt patterns touched more than 15,000 users before OpenAI says it fully shut the cluster down on July 28. The method is the interesting part. OpenAI says operators tried something it hadn't seen before: copying the encrypted reasoning output from one conversation, then pasting it into a separate conversation and asking a different model instance to decrypt and transcribe it. OpenAI encrypts the chain-of-thought its reasoning models produce specifically so competitors can't read and learn from it.
