Inuk artist Pudlo Pudlat’s ‘airplane.’ Emily Laurent Henderson, the McMichael’s curator of Indigenous art and culture identifies many of the drawings in the just opened McMichael’s exhibit ‘Worlds of Paper: Drawings from Kinngait’ a “form of Inuit futurism.”

Inuk artist and photographer Aggeok Pitseolak (1906-1977) in a photo by Rosemary Gilliat in Kinngait in 1960. Aggeok, along with her husband, Peter Pitseolak, broke ground as photographers, developing their own prints in a makeshift darkroom.

Artist Kananginak Pootoogook (1935-2010) poses for photographer Rosemary Gilliat at Kinngait (Cape Dorset) in 1960. Pootoogook would become the President of the famous West-Baffin Co-operative.

Checking out the day’s news and messages in Kinngait (Nunavut) in 1960. The man in the denim has been identified as Joanasie Salomonie, a pioneering figure in Inuit film and television, who worked with the Iqaluit-based Nunatsiakmiut film society.
