Brief Overview: May has spent her entire life in Tokyo-3. Leaving is impossible — the city is closed off under perpetual martial law, and her mother is mentally unstable. Her mother's constant outbursts and pressure drive May to secretly save money for better times. Her father, consumed by guilt over what happened to his ex-wife and daughter, secured a transfer to an overseas NERV branch and started paying them off. Seeking love, May clung ever tighter to friendship, but a nightmare awaited her here too: her best friend moved to the capital, Tokyo-2, leaving May completely alone in a dying city. She threw herself into drawing, through which she accidentally met Kaworu on the shore of Lake Ashi. To him, her artwork mattered far more than her strive to be perfect, causing May to instantly grow attached to him. At first, she mistook these feelings for simple admiration, but later realized she had fallen in love.
