Day 2 of the #MonthOfTheDead, a reclining skeleton flanked by crossed torches and angels on the Rickard memorial, 1699 in the kirkyard of St Nicholas, Aberdeen.

A memorial every day in November.

The final prompt for #31DaysOfGraves is ‘memento mori’. This slightly anatomically improbable skeletal guy is in Penicuik’s old kirkyard.

This stone is arranged conventionally, with a Winged Soul beaming cheerfully at the top, Memento Mori and emblems of death at the bottom.

Thanks for a fascinating month of memorials

On my 1st full day in Edinburgh I decided to just explore and shop. I walked through St. Cuthbert’s kirkyard, which is down in a huge ditch that used to be Nor Loch. It was a lovely autumn day with stunning views of Edinburgh castle.

The "Black Mausoleum" of George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh in Greyfriars Kirkyard. "Bloody" Mackenzie earned his grim nickname because of his harsh persecution of the Covenanters. It is widely reputed to be one of the world's most haunted sites, and the "Mackenzie Poltergeist" #Halloween

A photo that answers some questions but begs others. The grave markers match lair records but what looks like a very recent burial in lair 90 can’t be the person I think is buried there as his name is already on the stone on lair 89. Does lair 88 look used? #AllSaints #FamilyHistory

I liked Kirkyard when Dano owned it.

Saw this sign on a walk, caught my eye immediately, clear and concise.

Chad behaviour.

In Victorian England, there was a real fear of the dead leaving their tombs, but in a not supernatural way. Resurrectionists were criminals who exhumed recently buried corpses so that medical students could practice with them. This led to the creation of mortsafes, iron cages built around graves.

Double whammy for today’s #31DaysOfGraves prompt of ‘portrait’ with a portrait (well, bust) of a portrait painter. William Bonnar RSA died in 1853, and is buried in St Cuthbert’s Kirkyard in Edinburgh.

Thanks for that. They were very active and on 5 or 6 of the bollards right up the street.
I’ve also seen many on the gravestones in St.Cuthberts Kirkyard. Something, I’m sure, you are very used to.

I struggled with today’s #31DaysOfGraves prompt - ‘landscape’. I don’t have a landscape painter’s gravestone to hand, so I’ve gone more literal. This is the landscape Nether Kirkyard is set in. It’s very muddy and windblown, but also secluded and beautiful.

Day 25 - trees

In Tranent Parish Kirkyard, it's a squash and a squeeze to see this wee cherub which is slowly being hidden by a tree.

Day 29 of #31DaysOfGraves - Fruit/Vegetables

This richly embellished 18th century table tomb in Tranent Kirkyard, East Lothian, is adorned with overflowing cornucopia, a classic symbol of abundance, prosperity and plenty, with a cherub catching falling fruit carved on one of the legs below.

Day 31 of #31DaysOfGraves - #MementoMori

Perhaps the toughest pick of the month as Scotland is blessed with thousands of remarkable 18th century monuments filled with wonderful "Memento Mori" symbols.

We have plumped this year for this wonderful example in Lundie Kirkyard in Angus. 😍
