Great Kiskadees are plentiful throughout Western Mexico, and are usually flitting around the treetops and making a lot of noise. This one was so nicely posed I just had to snap a photo.

This gets me thinking of birds elsewhere in the world that people see every damn day, and how glimpsing even one would blow me away. Like when I was in NYC and saw a titmouse. Or a European robin in London. Or the kiskadees I spotted in Mexico, and imagining them as just everyday birds.

Maybe you can settle the argument. Here's a Kiskadee; my apps disagree on whether Lesser or Great. Taken at Pousada Salve Floresta in Brazil, it appears to lack the rufous-edged wing and tail feathers of Great Kiskadees, though Cornell reports populations in South America are less strongly rufous.

Great Kiskadees are a favorite of mine because they remind me of home. When I hear them here in the Texas Gulf Coast, I'm transported much further south to Uruguay. These birds' loud, unmistakable call, and their bold plumage makes them really easy to spot whenever they're around.

Rufous backed Robin is my lifer for the trip! Everything else so far are the tough city birds that you get all over extreme south Texas—Inca doves, great tail grackles, white wing doves, Great Kiskadees and the like.

the kiskadees and others. In fact, our guides in Panama were so excited to have a teachable moment on one early morning’s #bird walk through a golf course as a SOFL posed on a bench in front of a Rusty-margined Flycatcher, as seen here. “See the differences?”, they said. Uh—no, not really!
