Finished thinking through and writing my latest blog post, about one of the best known Galician klezmer composers of the 19th century, where sadly no surviving klezmer pieces can be attributed to him😓

Streetlight Manifesto is probably the most “millennial” band I like and I’d challenge you to find a song of theirs with upbeat lyrics. Sure the music is punk rock mixed with Easter European klezmer music, but the lyrics range from nihilist to downright suicidal

Excellent Klezmer band, fun, energetic, with very fine musicians. Rollicking and soulful, both! Lauded by New York Magazine for "cutting edge klezmer." Joe's Pub at the Public Theater = fantastic sight-lines, superb sound system and staff. Impossible not to have a good time.

there is more than one type of Jewish music, so short answer there is not one universal sound (Yemeni, Iraqi, Caucasus, Ladino, Yiddish, new 20th century musical genres etc). however if you are thinking of klezmer music, yes there was a sort of language of sound back in Eastern Europe ...

In addition, he donated a book of his compositions (all Romanian-Jewish-style sirbas and bulgars) to the cimbalom player Joseph Moskowitz with a dedication, that book is scanned and appears in Moskowitz's archive, and he was a Progressive Musical Benevolent Society member (klezmer burial society).

I'm surprised I haven't posted about Millrad on here before. He's just always coming up in old NY klezmer stuff as a guy who was working hard but not well known today. He has a bunch of pieces copyrighted in the 1920s and then again a bunch in the 1940s of which this is the first I've seen.

Question for my music aficionados: if there's a distinct sound for Japanese and Arabic music, is there also a distinct sound for Jewish music? The answer I got tonight was "Klezmer", but I think it goes deeper than that.
