“Pulling a New Proof from Knuth's Fixed-Point Printer”

Happy 88th Birthday to Don Knuth!

And thanks again to @robpike.io for Ivy.

Why did they call it Knuth's up arrow and not supercalifragilisticexponentiation?

Is there any hookup for individual volumes of Knuth’s Art of Computer Programming? 👀

Put together a little toy for experimenting with Knuth's up-arrow notation. Default value shown is 𝑔₁ = 3↑↑↑↑3, the first stage in the construction of Graham's number

Computer scientist Don Knuth, 1982, reading one of his favorite publications. Knuth's first publication was in Mad magazine.

OMG no!!! I still think Knuth's deep dive from "I want to write about algorithms" to "I need typesetting software" to "I need fonts" to "I need font software" to "I need software to write software" may be the most epic software exploration in human history, and kids these days have NO IDEA about it.

Every formal verification practitioner also knows Knuth’s “Beware of bugs in the above code; I have only proved it correct, not tried it.”, and yet

In programming, the top 3 sources of bugs will account for basically all the bugs you catch. Fixing the top 3 inefficient things will fix almost all the performance problems.

Hence Knuth's warning about premature optimization.

You just know that Knuth's family thought he could fix their printers.

You just know some poor compiler designer's boss keeps asking em to do some front end web design.

Reading Knuth's "The Art of Computer Programming" fascicles as they came out was incredibly key to discovering the Shuffle Sharding pattern, but I don't think I've ever written about it before ...

The 10th most common word you use, you'll use *way* more than the 11th most common word you use, etc.

11 bigots are responsible for 60% of the book bans in the the US, etc.

Zipf's Law is intimately connected to Knuth's Premature Optimization is the Root of All Evil.

I had to check to see if Knuth's web page is still up. Of course it is.

It’s all Knuth’s fault

Donald Knuth's "premature optimization is the root of all evil" was about micro-optimizations.

Designing your application to read and write data efficiently is not really premature optimization. It's software engineering.

I was just thinking I should make time to program for fun without LLMs — like writing a Lisp interpreter, or doing the exercises in Knuth’s book.
