Benten Yokocho was once home to "okiya," agencies for geisha. It is said that geisha lived in these row houses. Today, the buildings have been beautifully renovated into a gallery, preserving their historic charm while finding a new purpose.

久しぶりに川越に行ってみたのですが、本川越のペペが閉店していてびっくりしました。

近々に建て替えるというわけではなくて、その次の予定がまだないみたいですね。
観光で食っている川越市としては由々しき事態なのではないかしら。

そして西武鉄道にとっても、戦略がひとつ変わったということかなぁ。
そういえばレッドアロー小江戸号がなくなってライナーに置き換わるという話もあって、このあたりの話は実はつながっているかもしれません。
I went to Kawagoe for the first time in a while and was surprised to find that Pepe in Honkawagoe has closed. It's not like they're planning to rebuild it anytime soon, and there are no plans for a replacement yet. This is a serious situation for Kawagoe City, which relies on tourism for its livelihood. It also perhaps means that Seibu Railway has changed its strategy. Come to think of it, there's also talk that the Red Arrow Koedo train will be discontinued and replaced by a liner, so these two stories may actually be connected.

Visited Kawagoe #Koedo #LittleEdo on a daytrip from Tokyo, the Bell Tower "時の鐘" landmark is quiant but inaccessible to visitors. Would've provided a nice view of the Koedo old street even if it's only 3-4 storeys tall.

Day 12 is Toki no Kane: Symbol of Koedo Kawagoe. Originally built by Kawagoe’s feudal lord Sakai Tadakatsu in the early Edo period, Toki no Kane has been rebuilt three times due to fires, with the current structure dating back to the Meiji era.
