At the top of the slide, a line of text reads "Koha-US 2026 Annual Conference - Fayetteville, AR - August 20, 2026". A QR code is centered in the lower-middle section. The bottom portion of the slide has a dark blue banner containing: - On the left: presenter details including the name "Jason Robb, SoutheastKansas Library System." - Overlaying the top edge of the slide are green and red interface banners from a screen-sharing session, showing "You are screen sharing" and "Stop share".

Seen at Fayetteville Public Library, host of the 2026 Koha-US Annual Conference. ✨ #kohails #KohaUS #OpenSource #libraries
An abstract, patinated bronze sculpture stands inside a bright room next to a window. The tall sculpture has a dark green and brown finish and features a stylized dragon or creature-like head at the top, a hollow, curved body, and a circular base.

A big thank you to the Koha community - we had a great time at the Koha-US 2025 Annual Conference last week. Photos via Equinox staff member Galen Charlton on the road in Mystic, CT and at the Providence Public Library. #kohails #equinox #KohaUS #OpenSource #Libraries @gmcharlt.bsky.social
Galen Charlton posing for a photo by a draw bridge in Mystic, Connecticut on a brilliantly sunny day. Historical, wooden, glass fronted bookshelves in Providence Public Library. Photo of the auditorium entrance inside the Providence Public Library. The entrance has the word 'auditorium' over it in an upbeat orange color.

In sum via @gmcharlt.bsky.social & Brian Pichman (also thank you! great session!) #kohails #KohaUS #equinox #AI #Libraries
Slide reading: "To Sum Up: bots and crawlers are a real problem, mitigations are available, active management is essential: everybody involved is playing either whack-a-mole or cat-and-mouse."

Other ideas (we see you CAPTCHA). #kohails #KohaUS #AI #Libraries
Slide reading: "Other ideas: enhance Koha to add support for CAPTCHAs for Koha's search page: problematic, since it can create accessibility barriers, but may be a necessary evil, e.g. Cloudflare, Turnstile, reCAPTCHA, mirrors what's been done in Evergreen and VuFind"

equinoxoli.org
Tactical mitigations are still useful. #kohails #KohaUS #AI #Libraries
Slide reading "Tactical Mitigations: while IP and UA blocks are not a long term solution, in the short term applying them can be useful to restore access to a system, example: analyze logs to see if particular ranges are sending requests, then block them, ditto for URL patterns and user agents."

@gmcharlt.bsky.social - separate your staff interface and your OPAC. #kohails #KohaUS #AI #Libraries
Slide reading: "Staff interface vs. OPAC performance: lots of ways to set up Koha systems, but many configuration are such that if the OPAC is slow or unavailable, the staff interface is as well, the "AI" crawlers generally aren't going after the staff interface as such fortunately: turning off the system preference for OpacPublic to Disable, if already using Discovery Layer, you can close out the Koha OPAC, separation is possible if necessary."

@gmcharlt.bsky.social - you are not alone with this problem. #kohails #KohaUS #AI #Libraries

Brian Pichman - using tools like Cloudflare and Anubis is that you are not alone, there are a lot of people looking at logs and can help respond to AI traffic problems. #kohails #KohaUS #AI #Libraries

@gmcharlt.bsky.social - Monitoring will help with responding to traffic and predicting attacks in advance. #kohails #equinox #KohaUS #AI #Libraries
Slide reading: "Monitoring: system resources (memory, CPU, number of processes), open connections, number of requests over time, purpose: try to identify a bot invasion ahead of time."
September 5, 2025 at 6:22 PM
equinoxoli.org
@gmcharlt.bsky.social - Equinox is utilizing an #OpenSource solution: Anubis which sits in front of the website and makes the user agent complete a "proof of work." #kohails #KohaUS #equinox #AI #Libraries
Slide reading: "Anubis: open source, sits in front of website, increases the cost of crawling by making the user agent solve a "proof of work" problem first, simple to deploy, one caveat: its default branding may not be suitable for most libraries; an unbranded version is available."
September 5, 2025 at 6:16 PM

Brian Pichman: Potential solution: Cloudflare. It routes traffic through a variety of data centers which results in cleaner traffic. #kohails #KohaUS #AI #Libraries

equinoxoli.org
Brian Pichman - making it cost more for bots to make requests. #kohails #KohaUS #AI #Libraries
Slide reading: "Increasing the cost to crawlers: if you know it's a bot, can have some fun: e.g. bot gets its response after 10 seconds, Tarpits like Nepenthes dial that approach up to 11, Nepenthes aims to feed lots of nonsense to the bots. Tradeoff: such tactics require that you have the system resources to burn on the purpose, not exactly in the library's job description"

Know Your Adversary - an overview of modern bots. #kohails #KohaUS #AI #Libraries
Slide that reads: "Your adversaries: are well motivated: they assume that a lot of money can be made via their LLMs, are often well-resourced, including access to botnets, don't care if your catalog in particular has become unusable, might consider libraries' well structured data to be appetizing"

Brian Pichman - a historical response that worked was blocking (an IP address, a country etc) but that really isn't effective against AI bots. #kohails #KohaUS #AI #Libraries
