After 53 years, the Soviet Kosmos 482 Venus lander crashed into the Indian Ocean on May 10, 2025. Launched in 1972, it never reached Venus due to a rocket failure.

The Soviet spacecraft Kosmos-482 was launched in 1972 on a mission to Venus. But due to a rocket malfunction, it's been hurtling back towards Earth in an elliptical orbit for the past 53 years.

Hoy cae sobre el planeta la sonda soviética Kosmos 482.

Estad atentos, porque aunque caíga a 10.000 Km, para la prensa será en las inmediaciones de Madrid.

Kosmos 482 has been orbiting the Earth for decades. It's still unknown if the craft will fall to Earth intact or burn up upon atmospheric reentry.

My own plot of the final orbit, showing the Roskosmos estimate of the path between reentry and impact in purple. I guess that Kosmos-482 SA reentered somewhere along this track between India and the ocean south of Australia.

it would be the honor of a lifetime for kosmos 482, the half-ton titanium shielded soviet space probe designed to withstand the heat and pressure of venus's surface, descended from the upper stratosphere of earth and impacted into the side of my office at 150 miles per hour, killing me instantly

Kosmos-482, a Soviet mission to Venus that didn't succeed in the 1970s, may have a chance to survive its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, expected on May 10! 🧪

Best possible outcome

Kosmos 482, a failed Soviet Venus lander, reentered on May 10 after 53 years in orbit. Likely splashed down in the Indian Ocean. Built to endure Venus, parts may have survived.

On March 31, 1972, the USSR sent a probe off to Venus, but it malfunctioned & never made it past Earth orbit. Later this week, it will come crashing back down.

The probe, known as Kosmos 482, will likely reach the ground intact, but the risk is very low. 🧪🔭

The Soviet spacecraft Kosmos 482 will soon re-enter the atmosphere. It's the same design as Venera 8, launched 4 days earlier in 1972. They were intended to be buddies, but Venera 8 made it to the surface of Venus while Kosmos 482 got stuck in Earth orbit. 🧪 #PlanetSci
