Anyone have strong views on Kraftblock's mobile heat system? Basically they heat up bricks in a truck with waste heat and drive it somewhere it can be more useful. It feels incredibly inefficient and expensive compared to water in a pipe. EnergySky

They capture waste industrial heat and use waste slag as the heat storage medium. The slag is coated with an insulator of variable thickness to customize the heat flow for the client. Cool stuff.

What about batteries? Sure China is leading the way with cheap, safe sodium batteries, but what about steel? Kraftblock (www.kraftblock.com) in Germany have deved cheap steel heat batteries that use industrial waste slag. Or they could get some industrial scale sand batteries. Heat is the way to go.

In Deutschland stellt die Firma Kraftblock ähnliche thermische Hochtempspeicher her. Diese können mit Strom geladen werden und von 50°C bis 1300°C Prozesswärme bereitstellen. Eine ideale Kombi um ansonsten abgeregelten Solar oder Windstrom für Prozesswärme zu nutzen, oder negative Regelenergie.

Wenn Wärmespeicher den Stromverbrauch in einer Dunkelflaute absenken, dann leisten sie einen Beitrag, sicher durch diese für das Stromsystem kritische Phase zu gelangen. Wenn der Speicher beispielsweise Prozesswärme ausspeichert, die sonst mittels Strom erzeugt würde, reduziert sich die Nachfragelast (Beispiel: Kraftblock). Bei Kurzzeitwärmespeichern senkt das die Residuallastspitzen, was bereits heute wertvoll während einer Dunkelflaute ist. Langzeitwärmespeicher hingegen können über eine gesamte Dunkelflaute hinweg den Stromverbrauch reduzieren. In unserem Nachbarland Dänemark gibt es schon einige Langzeitwärmespeicher, die z. B. Wärmenetze puffern.

Es folgt ein Überblick über verschiedene Arten von Langzeitwärmespeichern sowie Beispielen von Unternehmen, die sie entwickeln oder anbieten. Jeder Speichertyp hat seine eigenen Vorteile und Einsatzbereiche, von Hochtemperaturspeichern bis hin zu unterirdischen Lösungen. Die Liste ist sicher nicht vollständig. Sie veranschaulicht aber, dass die Lösungen für morgen bereits heute vorhanden sind.
