As a counterpart to Saint Nicholas, who preceded the more approachable Santa Claus, the demonic Krampus was evoked in Central Europe for centuries as a warning to kids to be good — or else.
Merry Christmas from Krampus, Santa's Demonic Helper
Krampuskarten depict Saint Nicholas's darker counterpart: the devilish Krampus, whose current image visually carries centuries of folklore.

Another envelope from Austria through the letterbox this morning.
A krampuskarten postmarked 1933.
Google Translate tells me the caption reads:
'Girl, why are you afraid?
Don't let the horns scare you; Remember: Many a devil has been outsmarted by a dashing range.'
That last bit 🤔..?

It's that time of year again, gang! When you turn your face up in order to the sky to catch snowflakes on your tongue and suddenly notice the little children, all huddled together up on a snowy rooftop ...hiding from Krampus. Ah, yes. It warms the cockles of my heart. 😆 Enjoy the Krampuskarten!

The origins of this character are debated but there are traditional parades called the Krampuslauf or Krampus run, where young men dressed as Krampus and attempt to scare the audience with their antics in many Alpine towns, and Krampus is featured on holiday greeting cards called Krampuskarten

Krampuskarten are traditional European holiday greeting cards featuring Krampus, a horned, devilish figure who punishes misbehaved children, serving as a darker, humorous alternative to Santa Claus cards, often with "Gruß vom Krampus" (Greetings from Krampus)

Austrians believes Krampus dates from pre-Christian times and was merged with the idea of the devil when Christianity re-invented pagan customs.
