They compete for the same receptors in the body while also varying in which channels they affect and how; the tiny ratio of 7-OH-MIT to mitragynine in botanical kratom makes it effective for several uses without the OD danger but concentrated 7OH + opioids is a different matter.

Among them is Daniel Gibbs, whose son, Austin, died at 25 from lethal levels of kratom’s active compound in 2023. He said the ban should apply to botanical kratom and every quantity of 7-OH.
Parents of children who died after taking kratom, some with other substances in their system, have lobbied for bans of both substances.
The New York Times:
The relative hazards of kratom and 7-OH have been intensely debated in recent years in statehouses, where Mr. Ross and allies who sell botanical kratom products have pushed for bans of 7-OH.

i don't think it's an exaggeration to say the 7-OH that's being sold is almost literally the cocaine to kratom's coca

take the most addictive opioid in the plant, isolate it, and give people hundreds of times the dosage they'd get eating kratom leaves in a single gas station pill with no labeling
schedule 1 classification is stupid as hell, for all drugs, to be perfectly clear! but the lack of transparency/oversight and evil marketing they got away with on this very powerful opioid like substance was insane
