"KromiOS on the real machine" is up on the devlog: how it hands the whole KV260 to a program and takes it back a hundred times in a row, and the one bug only the real screen could show. Plus new icons, and windows that come back after a restart.

KromiOS's Studio reads your Lua as you write it: type the name of a table you made yourself, add a dot, and it offers that table's own fields and functions, however you gave them to it.

Unplugging a keyboard a hundred times by hand is no fun, so Kromi One's firmware does it itself: it switches the USB port's power off and on and times each return. 100 of 100 came back, the slowest after 0.42 s.

KromiOS is on the network: it gets an address by itself, answers pings and moves data over TCP in both directions, each side checking every byte. On the real board it has just got its first address from our home router.

KromiOS now picks up where you left off: after a restart your windows come back where they were. And the menu bar has a clock, with your time zone and summer time kept on the card.

Sergej typed the whole US keyboard into KromiOS on the real board, row by row, with Shift and accented letters. 323 key events: none lost, none out of order. 99 % reached KromiOS within 22 ms of KROM taking them from the keyboard.

The first time Sergej ran his Pong on the real machine, it didn't start. KromiOS refused because the game used a part of the system it hadn't declared. One missing line in the game's app file fixed it. Not a bug: KromiOS's permissions doing exactly what they're for.

This screenshot was taken by KromiOS itself: Print Screen now saves the whole screen as a PNG on the card. KromiOS writes the file with its own code, about 100 KB for a full-HD desktop, spread over a few frames so the desktop never stalls. So far in the emulator.

KromiOS's Studio now colours your code by what each word means: keywords, functions, fields, Lua's own library, your parameters in their own colour, and globals underlined with dots. And while you type, it offers names, your own variables and Lua's functions, as today's editors do.

A test that proved nothing: after a power cut, KromiOS replays the journal NetBSD leaves on the card. The first test passed, but NetBSD writes a moment after each journal entry, so the cut never hit the gap. With a slower virtual card it did: 511 blocks replayed, the same as NetBSD's own replay.

Tomorrow on the devlog: KromiOS on the real machine. It hands the whole machine to a program and takes it back, a hundred times in a row, and the display's own frame checksums caught a bug no emulator could show.

Pull the card out while KromiOS is saving, and it asks: "Please put back the card", with what's waiting and which app asked. Put it back and the save carries on, like an Amiga asking for its floppy. We pulled it at 135 points across whole saves: nothing was ever left broken.

KromiOS now remembers your settings on the card: theme, keyboard layout and sounds come back after a restart. A change is saved a few seconds later, and a damaged settings file is left alone, with one note to say so.

Switch Kromi One on, and about two seconds later our firmware shows what's on the SD card: KromiOS, a test program, Kromylist. Choose with the arrow keys, press Enter; when a program ends, you're back at the menu. KromiOS shows its first picture 255 ms after you pick it.

Hear it: KromiOS's disk sounds, in step with the picture. The click as the card goes in, the drive at work as KromiOS reads it, and the clunk when you eject. KromiOS makes them itself; this one is rendered on the Mac.
October 16, 2026 at 12:08 PM
KromiOS now keeps your files on the machine's own card: Home: for your files, Disk1: beside it, new Studio apps saved in Home:Projects. And like on the Amiga, "eject" finishes every write and tells you when the card can come out. On the real board it now starts with both volumes mounted.
October 16, 2026 at 7:08 AM
KromiOS makes its own disk sounds: the click and clunk of a card going in and out, and a drive's hum and head steps while the card is read or written. No recordings: the system makes them itself. Settings › Sound switches them on and off.

When an app on KromiOS stops answering for five seconds, its window gets a light veil and says "Not responding". Everything else keeps running. Ctrl+Alt+Escape opens Running apps from anywhere, and it tells you what an app hasn't saved before you end it.

The Pong from Sergej's first evening at the real machine, running in KromiOS. He typed it into Studio from a printed listing, like from a magazine back then. Now it's one of Studio's built-in examples.

Screenshot from the emulator.

For the first time, Sergej used KromiOS on the real machine himself: his own keyboard and mouse, 45 minutes, no script. He wrote a small Pong in Studio, KromiOS's code editor, and played it. Over 53,000 key presses and mouse moves, none lost.

A video follows soon.

On KromiOS, deleting a file on the SD card moves it to the card's trash, and the trash survives power cuts. We cut the power in simulation at every single write of five kinds of change, 120 cuts in all: every file came through whole, in its place or in the trash.

Update: KromiOS now reads it in the emulator too, on KROM's runtime, the same software the board runs. All 267 files and folders came out exactly as NetBSD wrote them, in 0.4 s of emulated time. The board comes next.
October 13, 2026 at 3:16 PM
KromiOS keeps its home drive on the SD card in NetBSD's FFS format, with a journal, and reads it with its own code. Checked against NetBSD itself: 267 folders and files came out exactly as NetBSD wrote them, a 40 MiB file and Unicode names among them. So far on the Mac.

This is KromiOS, Kromi One's own simple, extendable OS. Its Terminal is a shell in the AmigaOS tradition: RAM: and assigns, command templates, tabs, completion, a Lua console, and Lua scripts as commands. A 1920 × 1080 screenshot from the emulator.
