Urgh! I wonder if the DfE has exercised enough theory of mind to consider how an autistic/alexithymic KS2 child who is (subconsciously) masking to get through the day is supposed to meaningfully answer a q about the effect of a text on the reader 🫠

Another new highlight.

Teachers: Please, we need more training! How do we support the growing quantity and complexity of needs in a single classroom with limited adult support and resource, while also extending others?

DfE: have you tried giving children keywords to include in their answers?

🤣

Mini whiteboards remain a classroom staple 📝

83% of KS2 teachers and 68% of EYFS/KS1 teachers use them weekly for whole-class responses.

By subject:
Maths & Languages lead at 80%
Science at 71%
English & Humanities at 46%
Arts/D&T least at 35%

Teachers made the vocabulary and grammar GCSE work by teaching pupils the language they need for the tasks and their answers. Not by teaching the list.

What does this mean for KS2 and KS3?

Poems on Toast
Poems on ToastAttie Lime, illustrated by Emily FordTroika Books Probably most suitable for KS2 readers is Attie Lime’s latest collection of poetry. Her focus is childhood experiences and although the majority of the poems are upbeat, others embrace more serious subjects, including sadness. This is something she presents sensitively, particularly in Nan:‘Full to the brim with smiles / she knew how to / turn a day on its head, / discover silver streamers in the grey sky, / find golden treasure in the long, wet grass.’ Beautiful that.
