Before becoming a world-renowned Olympic figure skater, Kurt Browning spent a summer working at Chi-Chi’s, a Mexican restaurant in Edmonton. At 16, he had been training intensively in figure skating with his parents supporting all his expenses. Frustrated by the financial burden on his family, Kurt decided to get a job. His role at Chi-Chi’s involved balancing trays of food, including the tricky deep-fried ice cream, and learning the demands of customer service. Despite his friendly attitude, he struggled with the restaurant's quality service checks and was eventually fired after scoring poorly on an evaluation. Kurt reflects that the experience, although brief, taught him valuable lessons about money, responsibility, and the importance of focusing on his true passion. It also gave him an appreciation for his parents’ support and a newfound perspective on his skating career, as he soon transitioned to performing in skate shows. Despite his short stint, Kurt fondly remembers the restaurant and continued to visit for meals and drinks. Overall, his first job highlighted that some experiences, even challenging ones, can guide us toward understanding where we truly belong.
