Data centres could drive sodium-ion, LDES adoption in Europe - analyst
Sodium-ion’s position has strengthened substantially in the past 12 months but its adoption in Europe depends on several key factors including data centres and their use case, an analyst said.

We are doing that (three new schemes funded in Ofgem LDES scheme)

But will take many years to build and will have combined capacity of 4GW only

Meanwhile we have 10GW of new cables to England and many GW of batteries at various stages of construction, which will get there first.

If you had all the 18hr LDES in Sco now every boundary there wd not be a bloodbath. Although if the b4/5 had not been at 40% recently things wd be mildly less awful

🔹This project has identified the 10 most promising long duration electricity storage (LDES) and low carbon dispatchable power (LCDP) technologies.
🔹They will provide the flexibility needed to fill in the gaps from renewables.
🔹It will require a combination of tech to solve the issue

Currently,we have has virtually no modern, large-scale Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) operational on the grid.

But let’s ignore that & just focus on a few boats crossing the channel.

10.8GW of pumped hydro projects in Scotland that’s 6GW in application and 4.8GW awaiting construction

BUT the UK government hasn’t prioritised pumped hydro so it’s not going ahead

Latest Ofgem LDES (long duration energy storage) hasn’t given them the green light

A big Q for me here is that current projects still rely on pipeline gas for long-duration storage - once the e-TES runs flat, gas firing keeps the heat going.
What happens to that business model as falling network utilisation pushes up gas prices? Can we realistically move to all-electric LDES?
October 21, 2026 at 6:47 AM
(does anyone else see linepack gas as LDES, even *the* LDES to weigh others against? Don't know, don't care; it's all just fixed & marginal storage costs + fixed & marginal capacity costs + emissions - not hard to compare BESS vs PHES vs linepack gas vs tanked diesel on an equal basis)
October 21, 2026 at 6:53 AM
Cyclic electric LDES is genuinely really hard - the capacity costs for gas storage are orders of magnitude below anything electrochemical. Not totally ruling out collapsing BESS costs, but I reckon price shocks from a disorderly gas drawdown also likely here (perhaps not in Gladstone...)

The durations are creeping upwards (mostly 2+ now) but atm at least 8+ here needs LDES C&F

2hrs too short to really do that much soaking up. LDES decision very soon and those 18hr bess will

Next up south of the border is Hams Hall 350/1.2GWh (later 400/1.4). The SGTs have been energised so not long now

Capital Dynamics and Solo Renewables agree £100 million joint venture for LDES
Once operational, and assuming one discharge per day, the project will be able to provide the energy used by up to 36 000 households per day. Located in Islandmagee, the project received planning approval from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council in February 2026, just six months after submission. The 150 MW project can provide up to eight hours of storage capacity equivalent to 1200 MWh and is among the first large scale LDES storage sites to be developed in the Irish Single Electricity Market. With recent and anticipated regulatory developments, including the Renewable Electricity Price Guarantee (REPG), encouraging further investment in wind and solar generation across Northern Ireland, energy storage is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting the integration of renewable power into the grid. While short-duration battery energy storage system (BESS) projects already contribute to grid stability, under refined regulatory conditions, longer-duration storage can provide critical additional flexibility to help manage variability in renewable generation and support a secure and reliable electricity system. As more renewable generation capacity comes online, additional flexibility will be required to support a grid that is already experiencing rising curtailment rates. LDES can help provide greater system balance by storing...

Het is geen gegeven dat LDES dan de meest economische optie wordt.
October 16, 2026 at 1:21 PM
LDES is vaak minder efficient, dus als je moet kiezen tussen een bess met 90% opladen of een ldes met 40-70% ga je eerst voor de BESS.
