The "Science of Reading" is so cost-effective that Michigan will spend over $100 million on the unproven, 100+ hour LETRS training for all elementary teachers in addition to providing tens of millions more for districts to buy dyslexia screeners and "SoR-aligned" curriculum from an approved list.
For instance, saying The Science of Reading is an important and cost effective solution is a borderline incoherent statement. It is vague to the point of almost being meaningless. I also know lots of people with doctorates in literacy studies (myself included) who would take issue with the framing.

What makes sense to me is the idea of explicitly teaching phonics and decoding.
The NGSS is similar in that it asks teachers to explicitly teach science practices and science thinking skills.

I have no interest in defending "whole language" and/or the Calkins curriculum (as these things get brought up to end conversations), but I'm genuinely curious how you think people learned to read before UFLI, LETRS, etc. and whether you believe every student needs a legislatively-dictated approach.

Kansas Blueprint for Literacy centers the science of reading. LETRS-trained teachers matter, but kids also need extensive reading—fun, level-right books, ~1 hr/day. Reading for fun has dropped since 1984. Time to bring it back: parents, hit the library & get kids excited to read! 📚
