Great loss for LMB and scientific community!
My daughter's father is a scientist at the LMB, so I know how devastated & shaken they all are at the death of Dr Marta Shahbazi in the train disaster in Spain last Wednesday. This is a beautiful tribute to a brilliant woman. My condolences to her family & loved ones.

My daughter's father is a scientist at the LMB, so I know how devastated & shaken they all are at the death of Dr Marta Shahbazi in the train disaster in Spain last Wednesday. This is a beautiful tribute to a brilliant woman. My condolences to her family & loved ones.

Devastated by this heart-breaking loss. Marta was an amazing friend and colleague. She was due to ring me from the train that morning, but of course she never did. My deepest thoughts go out to her family, friends and lab members.

So sad to hear this. Marta contributed to our final-year undergraduate @geneticscam.bsky.social teaching for around 5 years, even under no obligation to do so while an research investigator. My thoughts and deepest sympathies especially to her family, and her group members in the LMB.

There was a two-week period of very heavy fog in Cambridge when I was a PhD student. Vision was limited to perhaps 20-30 metres. Walking to the MRC LMB several miles away was to walk in a moving bubble, a very strange feeling. The view from the top of the lab was the same as the photo below. Eerie.
Temporarily living up high in London.. and nobody tells you how existentially terrifying fog is from 30 floors up.
