It's time to electrify the LOSSAN corridor and move the tracks inland.

El Niño threatens the beloved Pacific Surfliner. Can the iconic train survive the winter?
A section of railway in San Clemente, as well as other portions in coastal Orange County, have repeatedly shut down for landslides, coastal erosion and rockfalls. Another stormy winter is coming.

It is insane that lossan has been left of of this map. We need lossan to be added to the plan and we need fast elecrified rail service between san diego and la via lossan asap. Busiest corridor in socal.
Huge win for electric rail: Chad Edison of CalSTA says final draft of the State Rail Plan will include 1500 mi of all day, frequent, bidirectional electrified rail service in 2050- a massive improvement over the H2-heavy draft. Rail advocates: your voice matters! bart.granicus.com/player/clip/...

Metrolink/SCRRA, LOSSAN, and CalSTA need to see this
January 1, 2025 at 12:43 AM
Matute is calling for a planning process to advance full or partial electrification on the LOSSAN corridor, both for passenger and freight rail! Notably, electrification on the LOSSAN corridor south of Anaheim is missing from the State Rail Plan.
August 28, 2025 at 8:40 PM
Ooh so the CA state rail plan DOES have the BNSF subdivision electrified to San Bernardino. If we can convince LOSSAN to fully electrify, that's almost all of metrolink electrified

The LOSSAN corridor is under threat once again this winter from El Niño. But one word is strikingly absent from this discussion: relocation. Will upcoming extreme weather finally be enough for the state to take action on moving the tracks off the beach?

OCTA must be entirely disbanded. We need a planning equivalent of martial law to fix LOSSAN ASAP.
September 29, 2026 at 2:53 PM
This is, obviously, *insane*, and should be one of the first things that a reconstituted LOSSAN/Metrolink governing body looks at. We'll likely need a tunnel that may look like one of these two options. Blue would be faster, green would be cheaper.
September 29, 2026 at 3:06 AM
But something needs to be done, and soon, and LOSSAN/OCTA need to get off their asses and start addressing this with a little more urgency. The surfliner is the second busiest rail corridor in the country, and an absolutely critical link between LA and San Diego. They need to act like it.
September 29, 2026 at 3:06 AM
For those keeping score at home, that's a train every 15 minutes between San Diego and Oceanside - definitely enough to make electrification worth it. Let's build the tunnels and electrify LOSSAN!
Service from Downtown north is every 30 minutes on the Coaster, 30 on the Surfliner, to do this there are a few projects that would be needed, namely double tracking, bridges, and tunnels.

You can read our letter on LOSSAN with @streetsforall.org here. Devolved governance isn't working. We need more state staff capacity, dedicated funding for LOSSAN improvements, electrification, and legislation addressing the Coastal Commission for electrification. calelectricrail.org/wp-content/u...

Last week the LOSSAN board voted 6-5 to reauthorize OCTA as the manager for the Surfliner and LOSSAN corridor. Senator Blakespear and board members outside of OC expressed concern about process & OCTA's performance. More and more are calling for governance reform!

Prior capacity programs like Southern California Optimized Rail Expansion (SCORE) and LOSSAN Optimization Study have failed because of weak institutions. To execute Electrolink, Metrolink and LOSSAN need significant changes to governance, state capacity, ROW ownership and capital funding.

Metrolink governance is broken. Disinvestment by local actors leading to systemwide service cuts. But the task force supposed to fix this, the state LOSSAN Working Group, is impeding public access and perpetuating the status quo. Read more here: calelectricrail.org/regional-rai...

One cause for concern: on the map from the State Rail Plan, the Surfliner/Coaster south of Anaheim is NOT shown as electrified, despite CalSTA's involvement. Let's make sure we change that - LOSSAN tunnels must #LeaveRoomForCatenary!
November 26, 2024 at 10:43 PM
Check out Ride SD's vision for improvements on the LOSSAN corridor! Catenary is necessary to achieve this vision, as battery and hydrogen can't do the 110 mph speeds they're calling for - and will also produce additional travel time reductions.

In California, democratic politicians are gutting public transit, active transportation infrastructure, letting the LOSSAN corridor fall into the ocean, while spending billions on freeways, primarily used by fossil fuel burning vehicles. It's hard to see this as not aggressively making things worse.
September 29, 2026 at 4:34 PM
This is crazy but also great to see. Train travel is such a great way to go. That's why the LOSSAN corridor is so important, and we make sure it will work for the foreseeable future. #infrastructure #travelbytrain #traintravel #amtrak #pacificsurfliner #lossan
“Nobody rides the train”

Metro's decision yesterday on the C line extension is emblematic of the problems that plague Metrolink and LOSSAN. Part-time boards of local electeds are structurally disincentivized to deliver system-wide improvements, whether that's a light rail network or mainline electrification.
well now that the monorail is dead, after today's south bay vote, will my new crusade be metro board governance reform to get all of these ghouls out of the way of building our system? signs point to yes.

Now imagine if we had done the same thing to LOSSAN instead of starting in the Central Valley…
