Forschende des Labors für nachhaltige und katalytische Verfahren (LPDC) der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule Lausanne (EPFL) haben ein Verfahren entwickelt, mit dem sie feste Biopolymere aus Holzfasern und Myzel von Pilzwurzeln herstellen können. Ihr Ziel ist es, bestimmte Probleme mit Giftstoffen aus Plastik zu beseitigen und die biologische Abbaubarkeit zu verbessern. Laut der Mitteilung hat das Labor auch einen Ersatz für Bisphenol A entwickelt, das in herkömmlichen Kunststoffen weit verbreitet ist. „Indem wir von Strukturen ausgehen, mit denen die Natur bereits umgehen kann, beseitigen wir auch die Toxizitätsprobleme und verbessern die biologische Abbaubarkeit“, wird Jeremy Luterbacher, Leiter des Labors, in der Mitteilung zitiert. Die Forschenden betonen jedoch, dass die Produktion solcher Alternativen in grossem Massstab nach wie vor eine Herausforderung darstellt. Die erforderliche Biomasse könnte mit anderen Nutzungen der Landwirtschaft konkurrieren. Zudem sind die derzeitigen industriellen Infrastrukturen für herkömmlichen Kunststoff ausgelegt. „Wir leben in einer Kunststoffgesellschaft, und die gesamte Industrie ist darauf ausgerichtet“, so Tiffany Abitbol, Leiterin des Labors für nachhaltige Materialien (SML). „Wenn Unternehmen etwas anders machen wollen, sehen sie sich schnell mit Kosten und Einschränkungen konfrontiert, die damit verbunden sind.“ Das EPFL-Forschungslabor LPDC ist auf die Entwicklung einfacher und effizienter Verfahren zur Herstellung von Biopolymeren aus nachwachsenden Rohstoffen spezialisiert.
