Staff say they rely on LPIs to separate pedestrians from turning vehicles. They say LPIs are supposed to be 3 to 5 seconds here. (IME they’re often shorter). They also say they’ve investigated the pedestrian scramble, but there are issues with accessibility. ?

Same!! LPIs plus “bikes use ped signal” signs mean I can clear the intersection before drivers, which is a HUGE safety improvement!
Chair Robison says that anecdotally, the new signal timing has been a big improvement for walking downtown. Says that driving is more comfortable too since it is clear when peds should be crossing and when it is safe to enter the intersection in the car. Hopes the LPIs remain.

But because we all use IVCS/YAS, it's widely crickets.

💯 The city has uncharacteristically been doing a good job of programming LPIs downtown and you can tell drivers absolutely hate it, inching towards pedestrians, illegal rtor and sometimes just blowing the light.

New York (and Montreal) also have blanket city-wide bans on turns on red, which also reduces pedestrian injuries. We’re seeing LPIs in Toronto and elsewhere in Ontario but with RTORs, it’s of limited utility.

Twice this week I have seen a driver hit the gas as soon as the "walk" sign comes on, even when the traffic signal is still red.

What HRM is teaching drivers right now is that if they don’t like a rule they can just ignore it and it will go away. And they will apply that to things like LPIs and no right on reds and everything else that’s done for pedestrian safety until they get their way there too. What’s stopping them?
