This is my JIKIRO series, which I created 10 years ago and exhibited for sale in New York. The design expresses the shape of dorayaki, a traditional Japanese confection, in lacquerware form. It can be used in various ways, such as storing sweets or small items.

Speaking of masterpieces of urushi-lacquerware featuring persimmons, this five-tiered jubako (stacking box) by Zeshin is exemplary. It is housed in the MET.

While most materials gradually deteriorate over time, urushi (lacquerware) exhibits 'aging beauty', becoming more lustrous and beautiful with each use.
Though you can enjoy this enhancement for a while, degradation is inevitable due to its vulnerability to ultraviolet light.

One of the coolest things about my latest #Kickstarter are the local Japanese crafts made by artisans preserving 1500-year-old traditions.

One of these is lacquerware. You can read about how my project intersects with traditional Echizen lacquerware here:

Behind Japan’s classic lacquerware is a small but growing number of sap collectors — some of them much younger than previous trends might indicate.

Museum collections! Arsenic in the taxidermy, mercury in the cinnabar lacquerware, arsenic in the textiles, lead on every dang thing
I’m almost always talking about research safety here, but the axe I have to grind with colleagues where I regularly get told “Simmer down, Phil” is that we aren’t looking after the entire other half of the Humanities. Art Safety is a thing. Libraries have got SRS SHIT.

And then there’s theater…
bandmates think i'm a tyrant for obsessing over details like loose hardware & taut cables but who saves their asses every gig when someone needs gaffer tape or a spare guitar string? me

Urushi lacquerware discovered at the Kamizakai Asahidai shell mound (4000-3000 years ago) in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture. What's remarkable is both the beautiful delicate patterns and the fact that it remained without rotting despite being submerged in water.

I saw yet another explanation claiming that “Japanese lacquerware is called japan overseas.”
In practice, English speakers rarely understand japan to mean lacquerware. Terms such as urushi-ware or lacquerware are much more widely recognized.
