A glacial lake formed by a catastrophic glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border has shown signs of shrinking, easing fears of a secondary flood. Chinese authorities reported that satellite imagery from Thursday to Saturday showed the lake, straddling the border between Tibet and Nepal, had gradually reduced in size, with parts of its bed becoming visible by Saturday afternoon. The Water Resources Ministry noted the lake covered 99,000 square metres on Saturday, a decrease of 21,000 square metres since Thursday. While the immediate danger has lessened, experts warn that risks remain until both lakes fully drain. Rescue operations continue amid challenging conditions, including damaged roads and disrupted communications. Over 500 villagers and tourists have been evacuated, with China’s death toll rising to seven. Climate scientists suggest global warming may contribute to such disasters, though the exact cause of the collapse remains unclear. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, deploying radar and drones for 24-hour surveillance. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about climate change impacts on mountainous regions.
