Memorials don't bring our loved ones back, although it does bring those left some comfort together. Today on 9/11 as our city gathers to mourn & honor rescue workers, am thinking of friends & neighbors who ran to help & some did not return. Lakotas drove in from South Dakota to help.Whole fire crews

At this time there had been a drought in the great plains for many years, as well as the genocidal slaughter of the buffalo combining to cause mass starvation on great plains tribes including the Sicangu Lakotas.

After one of the soldiers fatally shot Chief Matȟó Wayúhi (Conquering Bear), the Sicangu Lakotas returned fire, resulting in the deaths of 29 soldiers, including Lieutenant John Grattan. Chief Matȟó Wayúhi was a signatory of the Fort Laramie Treaty (1851).

2/2 "... In 1875 they sent out the Boy General, George Armstrong Custer, along with a thousand soldiers, teamsters, scouts, & reporters, to find a place to build. Custer brought back ideas for a fort, but more importantly, he also brought back news of gold in the hills that belonged to the Lakotas”

In 1868 it abandoned the Bozeman Trail, allowing the Lakotas to control what became known as the Great Sioux Reservation...The treaty each side signed guaranteed that land to the Lakota forever.
Forever turned out to be short.

The Lakotas & their allies were militant in the face of Grant's order. They were confident after defeating Crook. And they were inspired by the spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull and tactical leadership of Crazy Horse & others. They stood & fought. Lucky for them, Custer divided his attack.
