That article was backed by a huge amount of painstaking research, and HCN published all the data. They rechristened land-grant universities “land-grab universities.” As an alumnus of one (Virginia Tech), I haven’t thought of it the same since.

But the reason we're excited for this find is that #landgrabu has always been an open source investigation. Numerous scholars and reporters have utilized our data, and our hope has always been for other reporters to dig deeper into the buried stories. Here’s Bobby Benson on the matter:

Extremely glad to be able to put a link to LandGrabU, which explains how many land grant universities were funded with expropriated Indigenous land, on my syllabus. If you're teaching at a land grant university, you might consider doing something similar.
