"What is it like, I wonder, to know someone’s fate before they do?
To translate their future into existence?
To be its messenger?"

In Seminerio’s Courtroom

"I wonder, how did his people arrive here?
From Mexico? Ecuador? Peru?
Did they come on Spanish ships, preaching Christ?

Did his grandmother, young and pregnant, also flee violent men?"

"That day outside the courtroom when you fell into my arms ...

I didn’t realize how quickly I’d come to love you,
in our broken sentences, our tightly held hands,
our reassuring touch when we ran out of words."

"mis papeles dicen que existo,

pero el miedo no sabe leer,
no pide documentos"

that I am real
but fear doesn’t know how to read
doesn’t ask for documents"

'La tête, avec l'amas de sa crinière sombre
et de ses bijoux précieux,
sur la table de nuit, comme une renoncule,
repose'.
