We had an observing run on @keckobservatory.bsky.social yesterday. Despite the pessimistic forecast, @marinabianchin.bsky.social pulled through and ended up getting abundant photons from nearby galaxies using #OSIRIS #laserguidestar. This is a gorgeous shot of our laser in action from the camera 🔭

A powerful laser beam shoots upward from the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, towards the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The laser creates an artificial star to help correct for atmospheric distortion, improving the quality of astronomical observations. The Milky Way stretches across the night sky, a breathtaking backdrop to this advanced astronomical technology.

A stunning night-time photograph of the Milky Way Galaxy with a powerful laser beam emanating from the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. The laser creates an artificial star to measure atmospheric distortions, enabling sharper astronomical observations of the galactic center. The image shows the VLT buildings against a backdrop of countless stars and the Milky Way's luminous band.
