I could have written a function "lastline = True" and put it at the end of every conversation and then used that over and over and over.

Instead, I looked through Ren'Py's code and tried to figure out how to see if the code could tell if the next line was "return." And it does exist.

Anyway the ugly workaround that caught my eye was this: appending unicode "zero width space" character(s) to post text. This guy suggested adding a newline plus a zero width space to last line of text, but I would have also checked if appending them to all newlines helped
