Former world snooker champion Graeme Dott has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing two children over a period spanning 1993 to 2010. The 49-year-old Scottish former player was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow of two charges of lewd, indecent and libidinous behaviour involving a girl and a boy. The girl was nine when the abuse began in the 1990s, while the boy was about eight when Dott first abused him between 2006 and 2010. During the trial, the court heard allegations that Dott exposed himself, kissed the girl, touched her inappropriately and used games and treats to disguise his conduct. The boy told the court that Dott abused him in a shower, in a car and while playing online poker, and sometimes gave him snacks, fizzy drinks or money. Dott denied the charges and maintained that he had never behaved inappropriately. However, the jury convicted him following a five-day trial. Sentencing him, Lord Harrower said Dott had deprived the victims of a significant part of their childhood and described his actions as a gross violation of trust. The judge also said the behaviour showed features of grooming and had caused the victims lasting fear, shame, anger and mental-health difficulties. The sentence was backdated to 24 August, when Dott was remanded in custody. He will also remain on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life. The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association permanently revoked his membership after his conviction, following an earlier suspension from professional snooker. Dott previously won the World Championship in 2006.
