Today's shading practice, for reals. I made my darks a little darker than last time, tried to focus on smoother gradients, and gestured towards a background.

A sphere with shading and cast shadow; an attempt at background shading was made as well. Paper and pencil Reference pic

More shading practice. Flipping the pic to greyscale really helped me see where the different shade zones are; now I just need to get my hand to apply the proper pressure regularly.

Photo to sketch from, from the book "watercolor boot camp" by Hannah M. Pickerill, pg. 25. I took a photo of the author's photo of an orange and turned it greyscale to try to see the shadows better. A sketch of the orange from the previous pic, dated Aug. '26. The same sketch as the last photo, with my white-skinned right hand flipped around in an uncomfortable claw position; the edge of my hand, from the tip of my pinky finger down to my wrist, is covered in a layer of graphite powder. This photo serves to highlight two things: one, I regularly make a mess of myself when I do physical art; and two, this sketch was done by a human.

I skipped the first exercise because it was "go take a bunch of ref pics to get a feel for lighting" which I have done a bunch of already w/ product photos, but here's my first attempt at the second exercise. I want to do this at least one more time for practice

A very scratchy sketch of an orange (fruit) sitting on a table. The cropping is very close because I didn't want to show my handwriting - I had written notes all around the sketch while I was studying.
