The University of Auckland has confirmed that Professor Treasa Dunworth told first-year law students David Seymour “just wanted to get Māori to go back inside their box” with the Treaty Principles Bill.
She told students:
“The ACT Party has a red line saying that when we get into power we will get rid of this [Treaty] principles nonsense ... Cleanse the statute book of references to the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.”
“It's not like David Seymour was genuinely, constitutionally curious, right? He just wanted to get Māori to go back inside their box.”
A student sent us these comments, and the University has confirmed they are real.
Firstly, the Professor has ACT's position completely wrong. ACT did not campaign to “cleanse the statute book” of Treaty principles. ACT proposed defining the principles in law and putting that definition to New Zealanders in a referendum.
In other words, she doesn't know what she's talking about. She's misinforming her students, in an area they expect her be an expert on.
Then there's her swing at David Seymour, suggesting some kind of racial motive behind the Treaty Principles Bill.
A first-year student sits in a lecture theatre listening to an authority figure who may influence their progress through university. Once a lecturer has framed disagreement as prejudice, what student would feel comfortable defending ACT’s position, or even questioning the lecturer’s claims?
Universities should be environments where controversial ideas are tested fairly and rigorously, and where students feel comfortable disagreeing.

So sick of hearing "You're biased" used as a social, economic or political argument. I blame the school curriculum - we had to do a load of nonsense in history & science GCSEs about "identifying bias" in a way that left people utterly helpless at dealing with structure, ideology or epistemology.
