What a thing to be a bird above the trees! 🪶

Take 10 seconds to soar above our most northerly wood - Ledmore and Migdale, dressed in some lush autumn hues 🍂

Heading north? It's well worth a stop 👉️ buff.ly/YeQvpD7

Our former colleague Tim Hall has been awarded an OBE in the King's birthday honours, for services to conservation and forestry.👏

Tim retired last year as our Head of Estates and Programmes in Scotland, after over 30 years with the Trust.

Hearty congratulations from us all!

Just 7 rock whitebeam cling on at our Ledmore & Migdale woods. They were overshaded so we trimmed back adjacent oak to give more space & light.🌞

🌳 The rock whitebeam are the spindly stems seen in this photo. The bigger stumps are oak.

Hopefully they will produce berries so we can plant more.🤞

Congrats to @treesforlife.bsky.social on 10 yrs translocating red squirrels in the Highlands. Story by @dpcarrington.bsky.social in @theguardian.com 👉 buff.ly/YWhxTRX

We received some at Ledmore and Migdale Wood in 2019. Here is one filmed by @scotlandtbp.bsky.social shortly after release.🧵1/2

When we felled non-native larch at #Ledmore and Migdale Wood over the winter, we asked on local social media channels if anyone had a use for the timber.

Turns out it was just the job to make cabers for female competitors at Dornoch Highland Games!😀

It's #WorldEnvironmentDay and the theme is beating plastic pollution.

We are working with @uclengineering.bsky.social‬ Plastic Waste Innovation Hub to identify the best sustainable material for tree shelters. Samples are being tested at 9 of our woods including #Ledmore & Migdale seen here.🧵 1/2

The WT Scotland team visited #Ledmore & Migdale Wood in Sutherland in May, & it was a real treat. We took so many 📷 we thought we'd share. Big thanks to David Patterson of ‪@naturescot.bsky.social‬, Site Manager Ross Watson & our fab Ledmore volunteers for sharing & helping habitats to thrive.👏

If our #volunteers want a seat, they build it themselves!
At #Ledmore & Migdale Wood in Sutherland, the woodland working group did just that using timber milled from one of the larch trees removed from Migdale Rock.
A bonnie job they made too 👏 🙏😍.

🐜Wood ants at our #Ledmore and Migdale Wood are climate heroes, supercharging the forest's ability to absorb carbon.

🌲Ants "milk" a sugary substance from aphids up in the trees, and bring it back to their nests inputting carbon to the soil. 👏

Some species account for up to 39kg of carbon/ha/year!

We're super impressed with artist Tim Palmer's new #willow sculpture at #Ledmore & Migdale Wood. At 5 feet tall, it's a fine homage to the red squirrels translocated to the wood in 2019, many of whom now call Ledmore home. 🐿️
Why not give weaving a go? Check out Tim's courses 👉 buff.ly/WkZeQ9i

This #Ledmore&Migdale sessile oak, felled because it was overhanging a road, is being studied by @uniofstandrews.bsky.social dendrochronologists to help reveal how oaks moved to Scotland after the last ice age. More on dendrology /'tree-ring dating' in this fab education resource 👉 buff.ly/VFe2UkA

We've been removing larch from Migdale rock at #Ledmore&Migdale Wood to create space for native species. Some timber milled last week will re-enter the wood as way-markers, fencing & steps. Using our own timber means we know where the wood has come from. Plus it saves on £ & mileage too. 👏 Ross!

We have recently had an expert drone pilot covering our Ledmore and Migdale Estate as part of the South East Sutherland Deer Management Group survey of protected woodland areas. This imagery shows the detail that can be picked up with the drone using the thermal camera. 2/3

📢 Highlanders! Can you help look after this beautiful wood?

We're after a #Volunteer Woodland Working Group Leader to help lead a series of monthly conservation tasks at lovely #Ledmore & Migdale Wood in Sutherland.
Ideally you'd live nearby 😀🚵‍♀️
