(Pics taken September 2022) Sign under a map at Leinie’s Lodge, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, a store and bar by the original Leinenkugel brewery. It reads: In 1810 there were 129 breweries in this country. By 1850 there were 431, by 1860 there were 1,269 and in 1867, the year that JACOB LEINENKUGEL founded this “Spring Brewery", there were approximately 1,680 breweries in operation. By 1870 the number had increased to 1,972. The year 1873 Is when the number of brewerles hit an all time high of 4,131. At the turn of the century, the number had decreased to 1,758. By 1914, 1,403 were left. 138 of which were in Wisconsin. In 1934 the number of breweries in the United States were 725, with 121 in Wisconsin. By 1950 there were 392 left in the United States and 28 in Wisconsin. In 1979, 36 brewing companies remain in the United States, 8 of which are in Wisconsin. The breweries shown on this display are the remaining "family" breweries in operation today and are members of the Brewers Association of America - The Association of Small Brewers. The large "mega-breweries" are not represented here. A map (perhaps not exhaustive) of remaining independent breweries in 1979, marked with their taps. Highlights include Leinenkugel and Point in Wisconsin, Anchor Steam in California, Iron City in Pennsylvania, and Gennesee in New York Pour one out for the workers at Leinenkugel.
