A popular online retailer SHEIN has issued a recall for a pair of white costume contact lenses sold through its platform due to concerns over bacterial contamination. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has confirmed the recall after discovering that the packaging of the lenses may be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex bacteria. This type of bacteria can cause serious eye infections and irritation if the lenses are used. The affected product, identified by the SKU number sb2408056243278800, was available for sale between August 7, 2024, and August 15, 2026. At least one incident involving the product has been reported overseas, prompting the urgent recall. Consumers are advised to stop using the lenses immediately and return them to SHEIN for a refund. The ACCC has emphasized the potential health risks associated with using contaminated contact lenses, urging customers to check if they have purchased the affected product. The recall highlights the importance of product safety in the online retail sector, particularly for items that come into direct contact with the body. This incident serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant about the products they purchase online, especially those related to personal health and safety. The Nightly has reported that the lenses were marketed as costume lenses, which are typically used for aesthetic purposes rather than vision correction. The recall affects all customers who purchased the product during the specified period, and SHEIN has been contacted for further details on the refund process. The ACCC continues to monitor the situation and has provided guidance on how to identify the recalled product. This recall is part of ongoing efforts to ensure consumer safety in Australia's retail market, particularly for products that pose direct health risks. The incident underscores the need for rigorous quality control measures in the manufacturing and distribution of personal care products. Consumers are encouraged to report any adverse reactions to the ACCC to help monitor and address potential health issues related to contaminated products.
